Le PRESENT PERFECT

Si vous avez fait votre travail (correctement ou pas), vous avez découvert rapidement que le Present Perfect est un temps du passé que l'on utilise pour parler d'une action qui a un lien avec le présent. Quelques uns d'entre vous ont aussi précisé qu'il servait à faire un bilan.

On le forme avec le verbe HAVE conjugué à la bonne personne + le participe passé du verbe (troisième colonne des verbes irréguliers ou verbes réguliers en ED.)

Ex: I have / Miss Leon has travelled to the United States, the United Kingdom, to Spain, to Ireland, to Switzerland, to Germany, to Belgium and to Italy.

>> Je fais un bilan de mes voyages. Jusqu'au moment présent, c'est les voyages que j'ai fait. J'ai certes voyagé dans le passé, mais de ma naissance jusqu'à là, maintenant... non, là. Là, maintenant. Juste maintenant... Now... Ahora... Jetzt... Maintenant... Jusqu'au moment présent où j'écris ce mot, je n'ai visité que huit pays. (FYI - For Your Information : Il y a 195 pays dans le monde.)

Mon action de voyager n'a jamais été véritablement terminée, puisque j'ai bien l'intention de continuer à visiter d'autres pays. (Hear that, Covid-19? You have canceled my Prague trip. It's the only one you gonna cancel, you, awful awful round ball of death!) [J'ai longtemps hésité à utiliser le Present Perfect dans cette phrase, mais comme l'annulation de mon voyage me fait toujours mal aujourd'hui et que la Covid-19 a encore le temps d'annuler des projets, malgré ma menace. > Present Perfect]

Le Present Perfect est en quelques sortes l'opposé du Prétérit. Lorsqu'on a parlé du Prétérit, je vous ai donné le moyen mnémotechnique : PommeDeTerre = Passé Daté Terminé.

Le Present Perfect serait, lui, plutôt juste une Pomme = Passé. L'action n'est ni datée, ni terminée.

Vous : Pas datée ??

Moi : Bah non... ! Si une action a une date, c'est qu'elle est terminée ! J'ai mangé une pomme, hier. J'ai voyagé aux Etats-Unis, en 2011. Quand j'étais petite, j'ai perdu le bout de mon doigt. True story !

En revanche, je peux avoir besoin d'un point de départ ou d'une durée !

Reprenons mon doigt coupé, ensanglanté et douloureux (je suppose. Je n'en ai aucun souvenir.)

I have not had the tip of my finger SINCE 1994. = Je n'ai plus le bout de mon doigt depuis 1994.

I have not had the tip of my finger FOR 26 years. = Je n'ai plus le bout de mon doigt depuis 26 ans.

Vous : Encore des complications !

Moi ! Ouais !! Trop cool ! Mais en vrai non... SINCE est utilisé lorsqu'il y a une date ou un point de départ. FOR est utilisé lorsqu'on parle d'une durée.

Ex : une vie entière = a lifetime = durée = FOR

En 2010 = une date précise = un point de départ = SINCE

Et pour le « have not » au dessus... C'est trop long à dire... « have.......... not... blah.... ». Simplifions tout ça à l'oral « haven't » (ou hasn't à la troisième personne du singulier). Lorsque vous écrirez des dissertations en anglais, n'utilisez pas la forme contractée. « Have/has not » sera mieux accepté.
